Lent Course 2018

at St Cuthbert’s, Philbeach Gardens

& St Stephen’s, Gloucester Road

In the early centuries of the Church one of the most important things that happened during Lent was the preparation of candidates for baptism, which took place at Easter. In the weeks leading up to the festival the clergy would have been giving intensive instruction in what belief meant.

The season of Lent is still a good time to think about the essentials of what we believe as we get ready for the greatest celebration of the year, and as we prepare to renew our baptismal promises at the Easter Vigil.

As part of our keeping of this Lent we’ll be thinking about some of the phrases from the Creeds, the statements of belief that took shape in the first three centuries of the Church. The Creeds (from the Latin ‘Credo’ –I believe) remain an enduring and unique ‘rule of faith’ that provides continuity of belief from past generations into our own time.

Sessions will take place either at St Cuthbert’s or St Stephen’s, and will include a couple of ‘field trips’. Absolutely no prior knowledge is expected, just come with enquiring minds and open hearts –and if you’re not sure if it’s for you, just ‘give it a go’ and find out! All are very welcome.
